Fly Tying Bench on the cheap

by Wayne Mumford on January 10, 2012

I hate bi-fold closet doors. I’ve spent more time putting the damn things back on their runners than I care to admit. We replaced some a couple years back because the new ones were more stylish. In hindsight the old ones were fine and they stayed on track and looked ok to me. Anyway, I stuffed the old ones away thinking I might use them for something one day. This fall I made one into a computer desk- works great. While doing that it occurred to me that they might make nice light weight fly tying benches, maybe even portable ones. So, while I was plotting how to set up the new “man cave” for tying this weekend I dug one out and started butchering one into something usable.

The Bi-Fold Door waiting for the saw

I removed all the hardware except the hinges of course. It just so happened that the old desk that I’m going to put it one was just wider than the middle hinge so all I had to do was measure and cut the door.

Drilling holes for dowels to hold thread

I didn’t have the exact size of dowel I wanted but scrounged up some that would work and drilled some holes and that was pretty much it. I’m sure there will be more embellishments added as I go along but that’s the gist of it.

Nice lampshade eh? Those old nylons would make nice fishing nets?

I know, it’s a crappy shot but the Giants-Falcons game was about to start and I was in a hurry. Anyway, I’ve still got a couple leftovers that I might fashion into a portable to throw in the truck for summer. Maybe. I hate tying on fishing trips unless there is time- and there never is time so I’d better get busy now.

Good call. Used a wooden door with attached metal legs for 15 or more years as a do-everything-desk. Worked like a charm. And all for less than 3o bucks new back in the day. Orvis will sell you a much smaller wooden tying desk for 950 (includes shipping).

good call. I tie atop an old drawing board that was fabricated from – you guessed it – a door. I love it. although the large surface area facilitates accumulation of an unbelievable mess. that’s a very small downside.

Ah yes, the mess! Ain’t it great! Why put anything away when you can have it in a pile right in front of you!

Rocking the same leg. You know it’s Frageelay. French. I have the night light version.

That show is a classic around here, as much a part of Christmas as the tree.

Where’s Flick? Has anyone seen Flick?
Flick? Flick who?
