Yet Another Trip to the Toad Hole

by Wayne Mumford on August 16, 2010

Last weekend I did finally hook into a decent largemouth (4lb. class) with a foam frog on top water. Unfortunately the little beasts enthusiasm for the bug landed the hook right on the edge of his first gill raker and I didn’t get the hero shot in lieu of getting him back in the water without sending him on to his next life prematurely. So as a stand in I give you this shot.

Invasion of the Demon Top Water Largemouth

This morning we were on a different piece of real estate and the top water was fleeting at best and I missed the only good rise. So, after working the water into a lather far to long I again resorted to the spinning outfit and immediately lost a giant that broke me off without even the benefit of at least showing himself and leaving me asking that same old question, how big was he? And of course I’ll be blubbering about it until the next “big one that got away” comes along.

An unexpected visitor

We had some unexpected company from a young avian flyer who landed on board and spent about ten minutes flitting around the boat checking things out, eating breakfast crumbs and picking over the fishing gear.

Is this thing edible?

He looked like he was a bit out of breath when he first landed so I’m guessing he might have got a little farther off shore than his new found flying skills were ready for and he needed an emergency landing strip. I was getting a little nervous when he started eyeballing my foam frog. I could see him pouncing on the thing and accidentally unhitching the tightly strung bug and the ensuing pandemonium that could only mean trouble for all parties involved. Fortunately he must have decided a closer look was unnecessary and hopped up on the gunwale and lit out for shore.

And yes, there were fish too. Nothing small today, at least by Montana standards for largemouth bass. We boated six fish and none under 16in. and three that were 19in. I can say with great enthusiasm that it will be an awesome time when I finally stick one of these big fish with a fly rod because they are a load on a spinning outfit.
