Making Bass Poppers, Foam vs Cork

by Wayne Mumford on July 25, 2010

I did a little battle last season with cork poppers- cutting, shaping, sanding, poking holes through bodies for legs (and myself) and so forth. I bought some foam blanks in typical shapes which are fine but can get a little spendy and I had to mail order (wait, no way) and it seemed like I ended up reshaping them a lot of the time anyway.

I was poking around looking for some foam frog popper ideas and ran into this video on YouTube by Daniel Pierlet of West Palm Beach. This is one hell of a idea for bass and pike foam poppers. Pretty crafty there Daniel. So now I’m going to go burn up a few sheets of foam, glue sticks and break out the paints.

What can i use to coat a cork body for painting?

Usually what I do it use an acrylic based paint (oil is ok but messy) and then coat them with a clear nail polish. Seems to hold up pretty well, even with pike. You can also spray paint or air brush them and then apply a finish for protection.

Bought some hard foam popper kits from Bass Pro; and they seem to spin in the water because they twist the line . I do add legs to the bodies ,but I don’t have this problem w/ cork. Anybody else have this problem and solved it?

I haven’t tryed the foam popper kits from Bass Pro myself. I’ve never seen poppers spin, sometimes they end on their back and I have to roll them over.
