Survive a bear attack with duct tape

Two things we know in life to be true. One, a hungry animal, especially a large carnivore is going to eat something when it gets hungry. Consider a bear, a large Alaskan brown bear, there is not a lot of things walking around that he can’t bring down when he’s motivated to fill his growling tummy. Apparently that was the case when one of them came upon a guide plane that the pilot (who should know better) left an unattended cooler full of fish in.

With only a little imagination one can imagine the bear opening up the side of this plane like a can of sardines and quickly downing a cooler full of fish.

The second thing we know about life is that some creatures are also very resourceful and that is probably one of the keys to the success of the human species thus far. The pilot upon discovering his miscalculation and probably no stranger to adjusting to such situations radioed out to a fellow airmen and had some plastic sheeting, a couple tires and a few cases of duct tape flown in. The result would have made MacGyver proud and was good enough to fly the down but not out airplane home.

Moral of the story, don’t leave your food laying around where large carnivores still make the rules and always, always carry duct tape.

Update: I came upon the above version of this story at Gizmodo. After contacting the Alaska Dispatch about the “revenge” illustration use, Aaron Jansen the dispatch’s art director, gave me the link to the real version of the story. Thanks, Aaron- I love kong-bear!
