After new technology overload, trying to start the motor on our new fishing platform which happens to already be over ten years old, we got down to some fishing.
This time I did not even unsheath the fly rod. To many times in the last few weeks I have come out blazing with the “fairy wand”, starting on the surface and working down, only to be snubbed by the fish and torched by the kids spin casting acumen. Today I was going with the “scorched earth” tactics; I was out to kick some bass ass with some equipment that they understand, a 7ft medium weight bass whuppin’ stick, spinning reel and a Carolina rig.
I put the sticker in first and was feeling pretty smug, not in my house today buddy! I caught another smaller one about five minutes later and I was about to start getting cocky with the kid till he hauled one in and shortly thereafter another. A few minutes later I landed a dinker but I was back on top, I could hardly contain myself in spite of being a low-life ” worm dragger”, I was running with the pack. Just when I thought I might have the fish and the kid on the run it happened…
This beast blasted a plastic worm before it even hit the bottom and the two were at war and I instantly knew that it was going to be all uphill for the rest of the morning.
In the end we deadlocked on the number of fish caught but I couldn’t rally a seven pounder to beat this one. Drats, foiled again!

That last one’s a pig. Nice work!
Every now and then one has to lower his standards and drag worms just to realize how great fly-fishing is.
True. A good share of the time that is the only way to get into a bass. I’ve been messing around tying stuff this spring that would fish in a similar fashion but so far haven’t had much luck. A lot of the problem is being so deep that you can’t feel the bite through a sinking line that you are trying to drag along the bottom.
I think fly rod action with bass is probably most suitable for top water and streamer stuff. At least that is where I’m headed. If I have to go deep I will retreat to the Texas rig.
That thing is huge. State record is only 22″ How close was it?
We didn’t measure it but it was under 20″, probably 17-18″, weighed 6 3/4 lbs. The new Largemouth record came out of Noxon early this summer, 8lb. 8oz. I think.
