Condom Pike Fly

by Wayne Mumford on June 11, 2009

Fly tiers are a creative bunch, pretty much anything that has the possibility of attracting a fishes attention will also attract a fly tiers attention. Simon Graham the Pike whisperer over at Pike Fishing Articles was inspired by the alternative uses that the natives of Papua New Guinea came up with for using Durex Condoms.

I’m surprised some yankee brownliner didn’t come up with something similar after reeling one of these in on his bottom dredging rigs underneath some bridge or freeway overpass somewhere.

Simon shrugs his creation off but I personally think it has a lot of merit. I would think that this fly would get better with age, after a few Pike skirmishes the condom tail should have become nothing more than trailing tendrils giving it some nice swimming action.

Additionally, the resident Paupua’s probably only got generic Durex from the government, but one only need look to the decadent west to find some colored, textured, and even flavored condoms that might also make a nice refinement to this pattern.

Simon, I think you are on to something here.  You could even combine these colors, put a yellow one inside a green one.

Thanks for featuring my Condom fly.It kicked ass.Bagged 4 in one day with it..the 4th being a nice 5 kilo 2nd cast of the evening. http://pikeflyfishingarticles.blogspot.com/2009/06/durex-kicks-ass.html
Its a bugger to cast in to the wind but once in the water it balloons out and works better than most flies in my box. Will definitely be tying more up in different colours as you have shown.
