I took this image last night while prowling the sloughs looking for bass. Water levels here are effected by the lake and the little fingers of old river channels are now filling and making prime little havens for species like Pike and Bass.
I made a trip up the river past Hungry Horse today and the Flathead river at the bridge into Columbia Falls revealed a river being reborn. Gone was the coffee and cream sludge look of a week ago and returning was that emerald green color we know so well. The river level and flow had also dropped considerably from a week ago and it looked like the flow from Hungry Horse Dam had been cut back by quite a bit.
From what I could see on some of the north and east facing mountainsides, the heat and wind of the last two or three weeks really took a lot of the snow pack so it’s a safe bet that the water is going down to stay. A couple more weeks and it should be looking real good.
