Ammonite Nymph, one tasty looking bug

by Wayne Mumford on February 23, 2009

I was looking around for information on using latex for nymph bodies after seeing a few samples around in magazines, the web and so forth and ran into this article on UK tyer Steve Thornton at Global Flyfisher. The picture of the Ammonite Nymph got me stoked to go ahead and try doing some latex body nymphs.

Steve markets his realistic fly tying techniques and materials from his site, Virtual Nymph in the UK. From the site you can order his specialized materials for his patterns, tutorials and prints. He has also posted some free demo tutorials at Virtual Nymph, including the Ammonite Nymph. Steve is a professional photographer by trade.

I didn’t want to order his materials from the UK (sorry Steve, I’m impatient) so I did a little poking around and found them in a couple places, but settled on J. Stockard Fly Fishing back east. By next weekend I should have the goods on hand.

With the weather beginning to come around I have a nice little run not far away that holds some decent sized Rainbows that may have an appetite for this pattern. We shall see.
