Attaching an Indicator to your Fly Fishing line 101

by Wayne Mumford on November 29, 2008

For some people this is basic stuff but I keep getting searched by people wanting to know how to attach an indicator to the leader/tippet of their fly line so, here it is. There are a lot of ways to do it. This seems to be the most common method.

I’m going to use a Thingamabobber as they seem to be the latest rage in indicator technology. First, take your leader and make a loop.

Pinch the loop in the leader together and push it through the hole on the indicator.

Make the loop big enough to pass the the indicator through.

Pass the indicator completely through the loop and bring it around behind and pinch it together with each leader end as shown.

While holding the two leader ends, pull on the indicator to snug up the loop.

Pull the leader ends up tight like you are tightening a knot and your done.

And that’s how you attach your standard indicators to your fly line leader/tippet.

And yes I know, I should consider a manicure before doing these close-up kinds of shots but it’s one of those things that I always forget to make an appointment for. Same with the pedicures, everyone knows when me or the dog is walking across the hardwood floor. It’s a form of bonding between man and man’s best friend.
