Lost Trail National Wildlife Refuge

Our hunting trip for the day found us next door to the Lost Trail National Wildlife Refuge, near Marion, Montana. The weather was less than stellar and the hunting not much better but the ride around the refuge north road provided a nice finish to tramping around in the woods in the rain.

The 7,885 acre refuge was established in 1999 for migratory birds and resident wildlife. It even has Wolves, much to the chagrin of local ranchers who occasionally lose stock to the predator. Near dusk, the frosting on the cake for us was spotting a large herd of Elk coming out onto the grasslands just before dark. The refuge does allow a youth hunt but our only youth was home watching a football game. If they had been Largemouth Bass we would have had to tie him to the truck and lock up his fishing rods.

For us hunters it was hard to see so many Elk where we couldn’t actually shoot one, but finding them here was reassuring that at least somewhere, we could see Elk doing what Elk do.
